A Capital Idea – the third ARK Amble

By Ruth Brown · 28 November 2022

The annual ARK Amble is back for its third year – it’s even bigger and raising money for a great cause – but we need your help!

This December, we are embarking on a 1,201-mile virtual walk to all four capitals in the UK. We will start from our office in Birmingham journeying to London, Edinburgh, Belfast, and Cardiff before returning to Brum. We are doing this to raise money for the Trussell Trust – a charity working to stop UK hunger and poverty, through their network of foodbanks. (www.trusselltrust.org/)

The charity was chosen after a staff vote and it’s not hard to see why it has struck a chord with so many of the team. The charity is facing its hardest winter ever as the soaring cost of living means more and more people are being forced to use food banks.

No-one should go hungry but for the first time ever, food banks are giving out more food than is being donated. An emergency food parcel is being given out every 13 seconds. Therefore they are launching their first ever Emergency Fund Appeal, to help meet the increased need and keep food banks going this winter.

The Trussell Trust’s vision is for a UK without the need for food banks but sadly this seems further away than ever at the moment. In the UK, more than 14 million people are living in poverty – including 4.5 million children. They support more than 1,200 food bank centres in the UK to provide a minimum of three days’ nutritionally balanced emergency food to people who have been referred in crisis, as well as support to help people resolve the crises they face. Between April 2019 and March 2020, food banks in their network provided a record 1.9 million food supplies to people in crisis, an 18% increase on the previous year and during the coronavirus pandemic food banks have seen need rise even further.

The ARK team will go out walking every day in December, no matter what the weather, to ensure we achieve our goal to reach all four capitals whilst raising money for this worthy charity. We hope to reach our target of £2,000 and you can help us with that!
