A year at ARK, reflecting on a varied 12 months

By Tim West · 22 January 2025

Having just celebrated a year in post as Development Director at ARK, it seemed to be a pertinent time to draw breath and reflect upon a very interesting and varied year in terms of work.

I have been amazed by the breadth of knowledge within the ARK team in general and how this can cross fertilise through a project to help with successful delivery. So many projects cross through different departmental responsibilities that it has been a constant reminder that Affordable Housing development is an area dependent on the input of so many different bodies that without joined up thinking and a collaborative approach, the risks of failure increase dramatically. Input from Housing Management and Asset Management colleagues has been vital to the success of many of our projects and working as part of such a strong team has been highly rewarding.

I am currently working on or have completed projects with a number of clients such as Derbyshire Dales District Council, Stroud District Council, First Garden City Homes, Phoenix Community Housing, Bromford Housing Association, Estuary Housing Association, Cornovii and Trident Group.

The projects have been extremely diverse in nature, from traditional development projects, a self-build project, commercial reviews, regeneration options appraisals, site finding and bid writing to name but a few. We have also placed a number of interim staff members at Local Authorities, Housing Associations and contractors during the year, which has enabled these clients to successfully manage their projects and programs using the expertise of our Associates.

The operating environment from a development perspective remains uncertain and has its challenges, but there does feel a strong level of support for development from Government downwards which will hopefully start to filter through into delivery in the near future.

Ultimately, the year has been incredibly fulfilling and challenging. I know from first-hand experience how amazing an organisation ARK is to work for and the direct involvement with so many new clients has been a really rewarding part of the role.

ARK is in an incredibly strong position, already working with many clients in interim, project management, policy, strategy and corporate review capacities. We have a fantastic compliment of Associates available to help deliver this work and far more, and are more than happy to discuss potential working arrangements with any interested parties.
