Culture review meeting at Falkirk Council

Falkirk Council- Culture Review

Falkirk Council owns 16,856 homes and employs around 7,000 people in central Scotland. ARK were commissioned to complete a review of Falkirk Council‘s Building Maintenance Department. This involved exploring the prevalent culture and behaviours within the team to help better understand employees’ thoughts, feelings, and opinions about their workplace. ARK facilitated 12 workshops with 157 employees attending, who represented a diverse range of roles, skills, and experience; also including colleagues from administration, the depot, supervisors, managers, the Head of Environment and Operations and trade union representatives. During the workshops, people were asked to share their views relating to the following key themes:

  • People/Feelings
  • Management/Leadership
  • Systems/Processes
  • Other emerging issues

Participants were asked to express both positive and negative experiences, and to identify their preferred solutions to address these issues. Feedback was analysed and a series of recommendations made as part of the wider service review and options appraisal for consideration by Falkirk Council.

This case study highlights ARK’s ability to support staff reflection and change which can then be translated into positive organisational practice for the benefit of employees and customers.
